The Fediverse has gained significant attention in recent years as a decentralized alternative to corporate social media platforms. But what exactly powers this interconnected network of independent platforms? The answer lies in ActivityPub—a protocol that enables seamless communication across different services. In this post, we’ll explore what ActivityPub is, how it works, and why it matters for the future of the internet.

What is ActivityPub?

ActivityPub is an open, decentralized social networking protocol developed by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium). It allows different platforms to communicate with each other in a standardized way, enabling users on one service to interact with users on another. Originally designed as an evolution of OStatus, ActivityPub became a W3C Recommendation in 2018 and has since become the backbone of many Fediverse platforms.

At its core, ActivityPub defines a way for servers (instances) to exchange activity data using Activity Streams formatted messages. This allows for decentralized networking between platforms like Mastodon (microblogging, similar to Threads, Twitter, Bluesky), Pixelfed (photo sharing like Instagram), PeerTube (video sharing like YouTube), Wordpress (blogging, via a plugin), and many more.

How ActivityPub works

ActivityPub operates on a client-server and server-to-server model, ensuring interoperability across different platforms.

Client-Server Model

This aspect of ActivityPub enables users to interact with their home server via API calls. A user’s activities—such as creating a post, liking content, or following another user—are sent to their server, which processes the request and updates the database accordingly.

Server-to-Server Model

The real power of ActivityPub lies in its ability to connect different instances. When a user follows someone on another server, their home instance subscribes to updates from the remote account. When an action occurs (e.g., posting a status), the originating server sends an Activity to the followers’ servers, which then process and display the update.

Key Concepts in ActivityPub

Understanding how ActivityPub enables decentralized communication requires familiarity with some key concepts:

  • Actors: Entities that can generate and receive activities, such as users, groups, or even bots. Each actor has a unique identifier (URI) and a profile.
  • Activities: Actions performed by actors, such as Create, Like, Follow, and Announce (boost/share).
  • Objects: The content generated by an actor, such as posts, comments, and videos.
  • Inbox/Outbox: Each actor has an inbox (to receive activities) and an outbox (to send activities). Servers communicate by pushing activities to the appropriate inboxes.

Why ActivityPub matters

Decentralization and User Autonomy

Unlike traditional social media platforms that operate under centralized control, ActivityPub allows users to host their own instances or choose one they trust. This fosters diversity in moderation policies, community culture, and platform sustainability.

Interoperability

ActivityPub allows different platforms to interconnect. A Mastodon user can follow a Pixelfed account, comment on a PeerTube video or like an episode of an Castopod hosted podcast without creating separate accounts on each platform.

Resilience Against Censorship

Because the Fediverse is distributed, no single entity can shut it down or control its narratives. This makes it a powerful tool for free expression and community-driven governance.

Challenges and Future of ActivityPub

Despite its strengths, ActivityPub is not without its challenges:

  • Scalability: Large instances can face performance issues due to the nature of federation.
  • Moderation: Handling bad actors across decentralized networks is complex and requires community-driven solutions and support for organisations like IFTAS (Independent Federated Trust and Safety).
  • Adoption and Standardization: While ActivityPub is gaining traction, wider adoption is still needed, and variations in implementation can sometimes create compatibility issues.

The future of ActivityPub depends on continued development, improved infrastructure, and wider adoption beyond the Fediverse. With growing interest in decentralized social networks, ActivityPub stands as a key pillar in shaping the next generation of the internet.

ActivityPub is a powerful protocol that empowers users, fosters interoperability, and decentralizes online communication. As concerns over privacy, data ownership, and platform control continue to rise, ActivityPub and the broader Fediverse offer a compelling alternative to corporate-controlled social media. Whether you're a developer, user, or advocate for the open web, understanding and supporting ActivityPub is a step toward a more user-centric internet.
